Florianopolis, July 25-27, 2007. The Latin-American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Associations (FLACMA) organized the III Latin-American Conference of Cities and Local Governments, held in Florianopolis, Brazil, from July 25-27, 2007. Ms. Charlotte Diez attended the conference representing the Decentralized Cooperation Program (DCP) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Representatives from the International Training Centres for Local Authorities/Actors (CIFAL) Network were also present, including Mr. Ramon Peñagarino, Director of CIFAL Bilbao, Mr. Eduardo Guimaraes, Director of CIFAL Curitiba and Director of International Relations of the Municipality of Curitiba, and Mr. Alex Mejia, Executive Director of CIFAL Atlanta.
Ms. Diez gave a presentation on the capacity-building activities for local authorities implemented in Latin America by DCP and the CIFAL centers in partnership with other agencies and programs (ONU-HABITAT/Rolac, ART-GOLD/PNUD and Cities Alliance).
Mr. Guillermo Tapia Nicola, Executive Secretary of FLACMA, and M. Edgardo Bilsky, representative of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Secretariat, discussed their future joint activities to reinforce local governments’ capacities in implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Those activities will be developed in cooperation with the French Government. FLACMA indicated an interest in focusing on gender issues, women participation in local life, and women social inclusion.
