The First Steering Committee which prepares the launching of the Latin American Network on “Public spaces, urban services and urban safety" will meet in Barcelona from 23th to 24th January 2007. The “Public spaces, urban services and urban safety” Network is a joint initiative of UNITAR and CIFAL Barcelona in cooperation with the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne (EPFL).

The main goal of the Network is to sensitize local authorities to a multisectorial and multi-stakeholder approach of urban planning to get a better understanding of urban risks and to improve social coexistence and urban safety. Can the management of urban services be an instrument to improve urban safety? If so, what would be the best way to create a suitable urban environment reducing risks and inducing social coexistence?

Recognized local authorities such as the former Mayor of Bogotá (Colombia), Dr. Antanas Mockus, or the former Mayor of Curitiba (Brazil), Dr. Jaime Lerner, will attend this meeting as well as representatives from regional institutional networks and researchers – all of them experts in this field - from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, France, Spain and Switzerland.

During this meeting, the participants will exchange their points of view to define the research hypothesis for the project and the working methodology of the future Network. For more information on the meeting, please click here to see the agenda.
