Barcelona, Spain, 15 September 2004. The International CIFAL Network, together with UNITAR and the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) will convene a side-event entitled “Sustainable Cities and Villages: International Training Network for Local Authorities” at the WUF in Barcelona. As part of the official programme, the event will take place on the 15th of September from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room 121.

Only two years after the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development and one year after the first CIFAL training session, the CIFAL Network will gather, together with the regional associations of local authorities and national, international, public or private partners, to testify on the collective achievements in terms of capacity building towards Sustainable Cities and Villages. Knowledge sharing will take place around the three capacity building areas of the CIFAL Network, which are of key relevancy for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals: sustainable development, the information society and human development.

At this occasion, all ten CIFAL Centres (CIFAL Barcelona, CIFAL Bilbao, CIFAL Curitiba, CIFAL Divonne-les-Bains, CIFAL Durban, CIFAL Kuala Lumpur, CIFAL Lyon, CIFAL Ouagadougou , CIFAL Plock, CIFAL Shanghai) will be represented by the host local and regional authorities and/or the Director of the Centre.

The WUF will be the opportunity for the Network not only to share experiences but also to celebrate new partnerships, such as the ones with the World Bank Institute (WBI), with UNDP and the Partenariat pour le Développement Municipal (PDM - African network of local authorities).

In addition to the existing cooperation, the CIFAL Network will call for new partners to join the Network.
