CIFAL Atlanta hosted the first Local Authorities Meeting of the MERCOSUR Presidential Summit in Cordoba, Argentina, on 20 July 2006. CIFAL hosted the event as part of the official agenda of the Summit with the support of MERCOSUR, FLACMA (Latin American Federation of Cities), FAM (Federation of Municipalities of Argentina) and the OAS (Organization of American States). It was inaugurated by the President Pro-Tempore of the Summit, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, H. E. Jorge Taiana and the President of FLACMA, Dr. Julio Pereyra. More than 50 participants representing the MERCOSUR countries participated to the event.
Since last year, CIFAL Atlanta supports a strategy to increase the visibility of Latin American local authorities in all high level (Presidential and Ministerial) hemispheric and regional meetings. So far CIFAL Atlanta and UNITAR sponsored side-events at the IV Summit of the Americas, the XXV General Assembly of the OAS, and the 2006 MERCOSUR Presidential Summit. Such strategy will be carried on for the next CARICOM official meeting and at next year’s OAS General Assembly.
