All the versions of this article:

Ouagadougou , Burkina Faso , 21 – 25 June, 2004. The third training session of the Training and Resource Centre for Urban Professions of Ouagadougou (French acronym: CFCMUO), designated as « CIFAL Ouagadougou », was held on 21 - 25 June 2004. The seminar which focused on waste treatment was organised in partnership with the Greater Lyon, the International Association of French speaking Mayors (AIMF), Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and VEOLIA Environnement. It involved about twenty participants from 13 cities in French speaking Africa: Cotonou, Porto Novo, Djougou (Bénin), Banfora, Koudougou, Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Bujumbura (Burundi), Yaoundé (Cameroon), Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), Bamako (Mali), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Dakar (Senegal), Tunis (Tunisia). In addition, three participants from Lyon (France) attended the seminar.

The great majority of the participants were directors of municipal technical services or directors of urban sanitation of the represented cities. Only Djougou was represented by its Mayor, Mr. Ouorou. The extremely motivated group came to learn from regional examples of controlled landfills: Tunis (the first controlled landfill of Africa) and Ouagadougou (the city will inaugurate the first controlled landfill of West Africa in September 2004). Several cities from West Africa are in the process of implementing similar infrastructures, such as for example Abidjan, Cotonou and Nouakchott. Experts and participants also shared knowledge on other treatment modes, such as thermal modes, recycling of plastic and batteries, as well as the production of compost.

The exchange of experiences resulted in detailed commitments by the participants to implement newly acquired knowledge and establish technical city-to-city cooperations. Addressing the participants’ request, the director of urban sanitation of Tunis proposed to hold the waste treatment session of CFCMUO/CIFAL Ouagadougou in 2005 in Tunis on the specific topic of landfill waste disposal.
