Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 17-21 June, CIFAL Kuala Lumpur’s 11th course (KLRTC XI) on Sustainable Urban Transport was held from June 17 to June 21, 2007, and attended by more than 23 participants from more than 10 countries in Asia including Bangladesh, Japan, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Malaysia. KLTRC XI focused on important aspects of sustainable urban transport – including its planning, economics, and equitable access to urban public transport. Prominent speakers shared their knowledge and experience, which gave motivation to participants to create success stories in their own cities/territories.

How was KLRTC XI different from other courses? For the first time, Role Play was used as part of the CITY SHARE methodology introduced by UNITAR as a self-assessment tool. The Role Play raised awareness among the representatives of the cities about the different points of view of stakeholders. As one participant put it "It was very interesting for me as a decision-maker because for the first time I had to think and strategize as a user and not a civil servant. I think I understand their concerns more."
Another innovation was the review of the action plans conducted by cities/organisations that participated previously in a CIFAL Kuala Lumpur course on urban transport. For example the representative from Colombo City presented his City’s progress including their achievement to put the public transport on top of the agenda of the city. The City has just completed the Master Plan on Transport.
The workshop not only sparked interest but inspired participants to enter into discussions with other cities to build city-to-city cooperation projects and initiate action in their own cities. For more information on the workshop and its outcomes please contact Ms. Berta Pesti.
