Curitiba, Brazil, 28-30 March 2007. The regional forum on “Public-Private partnerships for management of hazardous waste in Latin American cities” will take place in Curitiba, Brazil, from 28 th to 30th March 2007. This seminar is co-organized by the Secretariat of the Basel Convention, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the City of Curitiba, CIFAL Curitiba and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Ministerial representatives coming from 13 Latin American countries and local authorities from the most important cities of Latin America are expected to participate in this seminar.

The main topic of this workshop is the management of hazardous waste. The seminar will focus on used oils management. The case of Guayaquil, Ecuador, will be analyzed during the seminar as an example of successful oils management in Latin America. Because of the partnership between the Guayaquil local authorities and the private sector, waste management capacities have been notably strengthened in the city. Other examples of public-private partnerships such as the electronic waste management in cities of Argentina and hospital waste management of Curitiba will be also studied.
