Curitiba, Brazil, 20-24 November 2006. “The environmental week of Curitiba” took place in Curitiba from 20th to 24th November. The workshop was organized by CIFAL Curitiba in partnership with UNILIVRE, the City of Curitiba, UNEP regional office in Latin America and the Caribbean and the Network on Local Environmental Management in Cities of Latin America and the Caribbean. Delegates came from 25 cities and 15 Latin-American and Caribbean countries. Representatives from Mercociudades and the Environmental Association of National Authorities of Brazil were also present at the workshop.
The main topic of this workshop was sustainable urban development. Presentations about solid waste management, air quality, urban planning and challenges to urban development and poverty reduction were given by municipal specialists in these fields. Among them, as a key-note speaker, Dr. Jaime Lerner, former Mayor of Curitiba and former President of the International Union of Architects, was invited to share with the participants his vision of the Curitiba urban model.
This workshop has strengthened the cooperation between Latin-American and Caribbean cities and it has offered the participants opportunities to learn about new urban management methodologies.
The next CIFAL Curitiba training session will focus on “Public-Private partnerships for management of hazardous waste in Latin American cities”. It will take place in Curitiba on 28-30 March 2007 as a result of a cooperation with the Secretariat of the Basel Convention.
