Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 13-15 November, 2006. UNITAR, CIFAL Atlanta and the city of Atlanta will co-host the first workshop on "Gender Equality and Local Government" from 13-15 November 2006 in Atlanta, USA. This will serve as a kick-off meeting of the "Global Leadership Initiative on Gender Equality in Cities" programme.
Making gender equality a reality is a core commitment of the United Nations, as it underlies vital development and human rights issues and is critical to global economic and social progress. In September 2000, the United Nations General Assembly, in its Millennium Declaration, called for gender equality among men and women in terms of education and life opportunities as key to the elimination of poverty and the elevation of society. "Promote gender equality and empower women" is the third of the eight Millennium Development Goals.
This workshop will bring together a group of approximately 40 delegates representing mayors, city officials and private sector and civil society from the areas of economic and social development. Other distinguished guests will include Program Committee Members Vice President Ana Vilma de Escobar of El Salvador, Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller of Jamaica and City of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin.
