According to the Human Development Report 2006 Beyond scarcity: power, poverty and global water crisis, more than 2.6 billion people lack access to sanitation, two and a half times the deficit for access to clean water. International organizations, national governments and local authorities alike are becoming aware of the toll the sanitation crisis is taking. As a response, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2008 the International Year of Sanitation.
UNITAR’s Decentralized Cooperation Programme has been tackling key issues of concern for local governments through capacity development. Sanitation is among the many challenges local governments must face up to. As a result, UNITAR has decided to concentrate on sanitation through a number of activities:
organize learning events for local governments on sanitation
develop material and case studies on sanitation
support other organizations’ initiatives by providing venues for learning about them
supporting city-to-city cooperation projects in the field of sanitation
